Empowering the Teacher to Empower the Student

DEMERA and Teach For Ethiopia (TFE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a new partnership to strengthen digital skills, professional development, leadership, and certification opportunities for Teach For Ethiopia Fellows and alumni.

The partnership represents an important expansion of DEMERA’s digital capacity-building approach.

While DEMERA’s university partnerships have primarily focused on providing students with access to digital skills and professional certification opportunities, the collaboration with Teach For Ethiopia introduces another powerful pathway:

Empower the teachers who educate the students.

By strengthening the digital competencies of educators, the impact of digital skills development has the potential to extend beyond individual trainees into classrooms, schools, and ultimately the students and communities they serve.

Two Organizations with Complementary Missions

Teach For Ethiopia is committed to educational equity by developing young leaders and education professionals through its Teaching Fellowship and related professional development activities.

The organization recruits promising university graduates and young professionals and develops them through training, classroom experience, coaching, leadership development, and continuous professional support.

DEMERA, meanwhile, focuses on educational reform, human capital development, digital education, and expanding access to skills required for the evolving digital economy.

Through its partnerships with Ethiopian public academic institutions and technology and certification partners, DEMERA works to create pathways connecting education with practical digital competencies, professional certification, employability, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.

The partnership therefore brings together two complementary approaches:

Teach For Ethiopia develops educators and education leaders.

DEMERA expands access to digital skills, technology learning, and professional certification pathways.

Together, the organizations aim to strengthen the capabilities of educators who can, in turn, influence many more learners.

Creating a Digital Multiplier Effect

The significance of this partnership extends beyond the number of Fellows who may directly participate in the program.

A digitally capable teacher can influence many students.

When educators understand digital technologies, use digital learning resources confidently, and develop awareness of emerging technologies, they become better positioned to introduce those capabilities into their classrooms and communities.

The intended impact can therefore develop as a multiplier:

DEMERA → Teaching Fellows → Classrooms → Students → Communities

Through this model, investment in the digital capabilities of one educator has the potential to reach many learners over time.

The partnership aims to contribute to closing the digital literacy gap not only by providing access to technology-related learning, but also by strengthening the people who guide students through their learning journey.

What the Partnership Will Provide

Under the MoU, Teach For Ethiopia will identify and nominate eligible Fellows and alumni for learning and certification opportunities in consultation with DEMERA, with particular attention to the participation of women.

DEMERA will provide or facilitate access to relevant digital learning resources, including available Percipio/Skillsoft learning resources and appropriate professional certification pathways, subject to available resources and funding.

Learning opportunities may cover areas including:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

  • Data and Data Science

  • Cloud Technologies

  • Programming

  • Cybersecurity

  • Digital Transformation

  • Project Management

  • Leadership

  • Communication

  • Other relevant professional and digital skills

The learning pathway will not necessarily be identical for every participant.

The two organizations will work together to identify appropriate areas based on the interests, readiness, professional responsibilities, and longer-term career objectives of participating Fellows and alumni.

Where opportunities are available, DEMERA may also support certification preparation and explore sponsored, discounted, or otherwise reduced professional examination costs.

Digital Literacy for Teachers — and Ultimately for Students

One of the most important dimensions of the collaboration is its potential contribution to student digital literacy.

Technology is increasingly changing how people learn, communicate, work, and participate in society. Artificial intelligence, digital collaboration platforms, online learning, data, cloud services, and other technologies are becoming part of everyday professional and educational environments.

Students therefore need more than access to devices.

They need teachers who understand the digital environment and can help them navigate it confidently, responsibly, and productively.

Through this partnership, DEMERA and Teach For Ethiopia intend to strengthen Fellows’ own digital capabilities while exploring how those competencies can support teaching, learning, and student digital literacy.

The longer-term ambition is to contribute to an educational environment where teachers are not simply users of technology but increasingly become digital enablers for their students.

From Professional Development to Career Development

The MoU also recognizes that Teach For Ethiopia Fellows are developing not only as classroom teachers but also as future leaders and professionals.

Digital competence is increasingly relevant across education, public service, development, technology, business, entrepreneurship, and many other professional domains.

The partnership will therefore support learning and certification pathways that may contribute to Fellows’ longer-term professional development and employability.

This complements Teach For Ethiopia’s existing emphasis on leadership development and DEMERA’s approach of connecting learning with practical competencies, internationally relevant certifications, and future opportunities.

The intended pathway becomes:

Teaching Experience → Digital Skills → Professional Development → Certification → Leadership & Career Opportunities

Particular Attention to Women’s Participation

The partnership also reflects the shared commitment of both organizations to expanding opportunities for women.

Teach For Ethiopia and DEMERA will give particular attention to female participation when identifying Fellows and alumni for learning and certification opportunities.

For DEMERA, inclusion means more than participation numbers.

The longer-term objective is to enable more women to develop practical competencies, obtain professional credentials, strengthen their career prospects, and become visible role models for the young people they teach.

A digitally empowered female teacher can have an impact extending far beyond her own professional development — particularly when young girls see technology knowledge and leadership demonstrated directly in their classrooms.

Learning, Measuring and Expanding the Partnership

The MoU establishes a framework for ongoing collaboration rather than a single training activity.

Both organizations will appoint focal persons and cooperate on implementation, participant engagement, monitoring, communication, and periodic review.

Teach For Ethiopia will support communication and follow-up with participating Fellows and document progress and lessons learned.

The organizations may also jointly explore fundraising, sponsorship, and other resource-mobilization opportunities that could enable the program to grow.

Future collaboration may extend into professional learning events, mentoring, knowledge sharing, technology-focused learning activities, and other initiatives agreed between the two organizations.

This creates an opportunity to learn from the initial implementation, measure its effectiveness, improve the model, and potentially expand its reach.

Extending Digital Transformation Through Education

For DEMERA, this partnership introduces an important additional dimension to its broader digital capacity-development work.

University partnerships create direct pathways to students.

The Teach For Ethiopia partnership creates a complementary pathway through educators.

Both approaches ultimately pursue the same broader objective: expanding access to relevant knowledge and skills and preparing Ethiopia’s young generation for a society and economy increasingly shaped by technology.

The potential impact is therefore not limited to the Fellows participating in professional development.

Every digitally empowered teacher has the potential to influence another classroom.

Every classroom can influence another group of students.

And every digitally capable student represents another opportunity for Ethiopia’s future.

From Teachers to Students, From Skills to Transformation

The signing of the MoU establishes the framework. The next step is to translate the agreement into learning opportunities and measurable outcomes.

DEMERA and Teach For Ethiopia will now work together to identify appropriate participants, learning pathways, professional development opportunities, and mechanisms for monitoring progress.

The ambition is clear:

Strengthen the teacher.Empower the classroom.Expand students’ digital literacy.Create opportunities for the next generation.

Through this partnership, DEMERA and Teach For Ethiopia aim to demonstrate that digital transformation in education is not only about bringing technology into schools.

It is also about empowering the people who teach.

Because when we digitally empower a teacher, the impact does not stop with one person.

It continues with every student they teach.

The partnership begins. The work continues — building for the generations to come.
