DEMERA Signs MoU with Jigjiga University to Boost IT Workforce Development

Jigjiga, Ethiopia – In a significant move towards advancing digital literacy and workforce development in the IT sector, DEMERA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jigjiga University. The agreement aims to collaboratively upskill students through certified training programs and prepare them for the demands of the technology-driven job market.

The MoU was signed during an official ceremony attended by top executives from DEMERA and the leadership of Jigjiga University. The partnership will provide students with access to DEMERA’s online training platform, offering Microsoft-related certification courses at an affordable cost.

Speaking at the event, DEMERA Chairwoman expressed her appreciation for the collaboration and emphasized the organization's commitment. “We are excited to work with Jigjiga University and will do everything in our capacity to ensure the success of this initiative. This partnership will bridge the digital divide and empower students with the necessary IT skills,” she said.

Jigjiga University President, Dr. Beshir Abdullahi Mohammed, welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the university’s dedication to the project. “We are committed to supporting this collaboration and will allocate sufficient resources to ensure its success. Most of our students have little or no exposure to computers, and this initiative will be a game-changer.”

Dr. Beshir highlighted the challenges facing students in the region, noting that many lack basic computer literacy. “Only a small number of students are familiar with technology, while the majority don’t even know how to operate a computer. This is a pressing issue, and we are determined to change that with DEMERA’s support.”

He also shared his observations from international visits, particularly in the U.S., where he witnessed Ethiopians holding key positions in the tech industry. “Diaspora engagement is vital, and we need more partnerships like this to harness our potential,” he added.

Dr. Beshir concluded by emphasizing the importance of embracing technology in education. “Creating an online platform is key to progress. Change comes through challenges, and empowering our students is the path forward. This is a blessed initiative, and Jigjiga University is proud to be part of it.”

Also present at the MoU signing ceremony were Mr. Tewodros Guday, Co-founder and Vice Chairman of DEMERA; Mr. Mokonnen Ayele, Co-founder and Board Member; and Mr. Eskinder Mesfin, Board Member of DEMERA.

The collaboration marks a pivotal step in strengthening Ethiopia’s human capital and fostering innovation and opportunity for students in the Somali region and beyond.
