In a landmark collaboration, DEMERA and Bahir Dar University (BDU) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance IT training and certification programs in Ethiopia. This partnership marks another milestone in DEMERA’s ongoing mission to empower young professionals and women in the technology sector, reinforcing its reputation as a leading force in digital education and workforce development.

A Strategic Collaboration to Bridge the IT Skills Gap
The MoU, signed on January 15, 2025, establishes a strong partnership between Bahir Dar Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Computing (App Factory) and DEMERA. The agreement focuses on addressing the critical skills gap in Ethiopia's tech industry by providing internationally recognized Microsoft certifications and hands-on training for 150 to 300 individuals over the next three years.
This initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s broader strategy to position itself as a competitive global outsourcing destination. By equipping students with high-demand IT skills, the collaboration will not only enhance employability but also contribute to the nation’s economic growth and innovation capacity.
Building on a Proven Track Record
DEMERA has a strong history of working with higher education institutions to implement impactful IT training programs. Through previous collaborations with leading universities, DEMERA has successfully trained and certified numerous individuals, creating a growing network of skilled IT professionals. Notably, DEMERA’s programs have prioritized inclusivity, ensuring that women have increased opportunities to enter and excel in the technology sector.
Since February 2024, DEMERA has certified 28 individuals with Microsoft Associate-level certifications, with 21% of them being women. This success demonstrates the effectiveness of DEMERA’s training methodology and its ability to produce industry-ready professionals. By expanding its reach through Bahir Dar University, DEMERA aims to amplify these achievements on an even larger scale.
The Impact of the MoU
The significance of this MoU extends beyond skill development. The partnership is designed to:
Increase Employability: By offering globally recognized certifications, trainees will gain a competitive edge in the job market.
Promote Gender Equality: With a strong focus on women’s participation, the initiative seeks to create a more inclusive tech workforce.
Boost Economic Growth: Strengthening Ethiopia’s digital workforce will attract foreign investment and create new opportunities for outsourcing.
Enhance Academic-Industry Collaboration: By bridging the gap between academia and industry needs, this initiative will foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
Looking Ahead
With this collaboration, DEMERA and Bahir Dar University are paving the way for a transformative impact on Ethiopia’s IT sector. As the program unfolds, it is expected to create a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals ready to contribute to the global digital economy.
